Lyndsy Edland – Platelet Donor of the Year

Lyndsy’s first donation was in 2000 as a student at Foss High School.  After graduation, Lyndsy continued donating blood where she worked. In 2008, Lyndsy became a platelet donor and recently reached two gallons of donated blood and platelets.  We appreciate her commitment to the blood supply and the community.

Lyndsy was selected after another long time platelet donor requested that we recognize a younger committed donor who hadn’t had the opportunity to donate as much as he had. He felt it is important to recognize the younger generation of donors as well as long-time donors. His point was well made and we are appreciative of the suggestion, which gave us the opportunity to acknowledge Lyndsy’s accomplishments.

Congratulations Lyndsy, 2009 Platelet Donor of the Year!

Mike Thomson – Whole Blood Donor of the Year

Mike Thomson is one of our top CRBS whole blood donors.  Mike has donated a staggering 219 units of whole blood and 23 units of platelets. Those donations combined equal 30 gallons of donated blood products and many years of visits to our Tacoma Donor Center.  We would like to thank Mike for his commitment and support.

Fred Ackers – ECMO Baby Blood Donor of the Year

ECMO stands for Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation, a special part of our Baby Blood program. Fred Ackers is our 2009 ECMO Baby Blood Donor of the Year.  Fred’s first blood donation was in 1951.  Since then, he has donated 150 times, equivalent to 18 gallons of blood.  During the last four years, Fred has donated for this program six times each year, which is the maximum number of annual donations allowed.  Fred says, “When there’s an opportunity to help a child, I just can’t pass it up.”  Congratulations to Fred for being our Baby Blood Donor of the Year!

Kiwanis Club of Peninsula, Gig Harbor – Community Blood Drive of the Year

Kathy Robers is President of the Kiwanis Club of Peninsula and a highly dedicated Blood Drive Coordinator.  Kathy is also active as a volunteer in many other community activities. We have partnered with Kathy and her Kiwanis Club on blood drives since December 2007.  The Kiwanis community drives rarely have less than 30 donors and have reached 40 on several occasions. During 2009, their Kiwanis Club sponsored six drives and registered 186 donors. Congratulations Kathy and the Kiwanis Club of Peninsula on being our Community Blood Drive of the Year!

Bethany Baptist Church (Puyallup) – Church Blood Drive of the Year

Next to our schools, churches provide the second largest number of units to our community’s blood supply. Bethany Baptist Church, Puyallup, is our 2009 Church Blood Drive of the Year recipient. After sponsoring one blood drive in 2008, Bethany Baptist made the decision to begin supporting drives on a more regular basis. During 2009, they held five drives averaging 33 donors per drive, which was the highest average of any regular church drive.  Thank you Bethany Baptist Church,  2009 Church Blood Drive of the Year!

Puyallup High School – High School Blood Drive of the Year

On November 14, 2008, the Puyallup High School (PHS) Leadership Class set a school record when they registered 142 blood donors during their fall blood drive.  Later that school year, they beat that record with 145 registered donors.  During their three blood drives in the 2008-09 school year, the PHS Vikings registered an astounding total of 404 blood donors.

Anatomy and Physiology classes took over the blood drive program for the 2009-10 school year. Their November blood drive was a huge success and we’re looking forward to more record-breaking drives from the new coordinating group.  Congratulations Puyallup High School!

Vivian Leach – Community Inspiration Award
Our 2009 Community Inspiration Award recipient is Vivian Leach, long-time blood drive coordinator for Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU).  For over 13 years, Vivian has been coordinating blood drives at TPU.  She consistently recruits 60-70 donors for their bi-monthly drives. Over the years, TPU drives have registered over 3,800 donors, a truly remarkable accomplishment.
About four years ago, Vivian discovered she had cancer. There was a period when she wasn’t able to be present at her drives, but they continued to be her drives, and donors continued to come and donate in large numbers. Her energy, the fun she creates around the drives, and the results are unbelievable. Vivian is now completely cancer free and continues to be an inspiration to us at CRBS. She has inspired her fellow employees at TPU for over a decade, as well as the many others she has come in contact with throughout her life.
